Giant Steps Sydney is a world leading educational facility for children with autism. The program is trans-disciplinary which includes speech, music and occupational therapy. It is a high-level intensive program for children and young people aged 2-18 years of age. The team approach at Giant Steps Sydney provides maximum support to families through the provision of home programs and frequent consultation with parents and carers. All students engage in a full range of activities which are adjusted using a range of autism friendly strategies. As Giant Steps entered its fifteenth year of operation, it became clear that there was a need for autism specific service provision for young adults leaving school. As a result 2009 saw the opening of the GS Community College (GSCC) to address the need for an autism-specific post school options program. The GSCC is based on the principles of the adult community education programs which provide the mainstream adult community with a wide variety of courses for continued learning. Giant Steps has had remarkable success teaching children with autism to communicate more effectively, integrating them into mainstream schools, helping them develop functional life skills and providing them the opportunity to reach their potential. The additional support offered at Giant Steps Sydney caters specifically to the needs of children with autism thereby enabling our children to achieve milestones previously thought unattainable.
The fifth annual Giant Steps Bike Ride will be held 27 - 29 March 2009. A group of about 30 riders will ride over 300 km in the Victorian Alps climbing over 4,700 m to raise $200,000 for Giant Steps, a school for children with autism.
The proceeds will enable the commencement of a post school program and assist in general running costs of the school.
