Boosting jobs, industry and wellbeing with renewables and clean technology
The Diversifying The Hunter project will empower communities to create their own vision for a renewable, diversified and resilient Hunter Valley.
It will also serve as a case study to show how other fossil fuel dependent regional areas of Australia can thrive and benefit from diversifying their economy and taking advantage of the opportunities of a decarbonised economy.
How?
Co-designed by the Hunter community and Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE), the aim of this project is to:
Why BZE?
BZE has a unique model of creating credible, actionable zero carbon transition plans, and empowering communities to engage with climate action with hope and positivity.
BZE also has an impressive record of success. For example the NT 10GW plan which showed how the NT can grow a local renewable industry, a strategy that creates over 8,000 new jobs and over $2 billion in revenue by 2030. A second example is the Repowering Port Augusta blueprint for replacing coal with solar, galvanised the Port Augusta community to run a five-year campaign. This resulted in the South Australian Government backing a 100% renewable energy solution for Port Augusta. The blueprint paved the way to energy security, power price stability, increased jobs, emissions reductions and beneficial health and economic outcomes.

The 10 Gigawatt Vision - released last year, showed how the Northern Territory can put renewable energy at the centre of a sustainable growth strategy, creating over 8,000 new jobs and $2 billion in revenue by 2030.
Electrifying Industry - The report shows how electrical heating can be used in the manufacturing of everyday products such as food, paper, bricks, plastic and steel.
The Zero Carbon Communities Guide - quickly inspired community confidence and action at the local level.
Rethinking Cement - is the world’s first report showing how cement can be decarbonised - generated national interest and support across the construction and infrastructure sector within months of its release.

We recognise that Aboriginal people’s sovereignty over their land was never ceded and the impact of this ongoing dispossession continues to this day. Beyond Zero Emissions stands in solidarity with First Nations people in calling for the establishment of a First Nations Voice in the Constitution, as described in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. We further support calls for the establishment of a Makarrata Commission on agreement-making and truth-telling between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and governments. Beyond Zero Emissions maintains an office on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri-willam people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to all First Nations Elders past, present and those emerging.
