What are Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are lifelong developmental disabilities characterised by marked difficulties in social interaction, communication, restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours, and sensory sensitivities. Research shows that about 1 in 100 children, almost 230,000 Australians, have ASD and that it is more prevalent in boys than girls. Currently, there is no single known cause for ASD, however recent research has identified strong genetic links.

How will the funds be used?

All funds raised will be allocated to specific events, programs or services that are provided by Hunter Connect to allow us to achieve our objectives for the families and children that we support.

Key areas of expenditure include:
  •  Phone and email advice and support for parents and carers of children affected by ASD
  •  Monthly Support Meetings for parents and carers held throughout the Hunter
  •  Surfers For Autism event - A very special event held annually since 2012 which is volunteer driven. It is a day where individuals with ASD and other developmental delays are given the opportunity to interact with typical peers, service providers and the wider community and to show their capabilities through assisted surfing and beach activities. The event is growing each and every year, reaching hundreds of families
  •  Other one-off respite events that are provided throughout the year for families and children
  •  Social Skills Development program - A facilitated small group program for 8-12 year olds with ASD utilising Secrent Agent Society (SAS) courseware.
  •  Work Ready Program - A facilitated small group for High School students to prepare them for employment
