Joondalup Men's Shed Inc.

Joondalup Men's Shed Building Fund

The Joondalup Men's Shed (JMS) was launched on 26th August 2010  to fill an obvious need for a men's shed in Perth's Northern suburbs. Open to all males over 18 years, the JMS is a member of Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA).

Collectively, Australia's 800 sheds have a total membership of over 100,000 "shedders" making it the largest men's support organisation in Australia.

More importantly for Perth's northern suburbs, the JMS is registered health promotion charity committed to encouraging and supporting men of all ages to live full, active, healthy and independent lives by providing space for men to pursue their hobbies and interests, to socialise, build friendships, and (if they choose) to work on projects benefiting the wider community.

In addition to workshops JMS boasts a small library, computer room and games area. It also holds regular social functions, providing interesting guest speakers on a wide range of topics including monthly health sessions which are open to the public.

The JMS works closely with Local, State and Federal Government agencies and as an example commenced a trial programme in July 2012 entitled "Beyond Gambling" with the aim of combating problem gambling in the community by diverting men to interesting, fulfilling and rewarding activities.

The JMS welcomes opportunities to mentor youth and encourages applications from folk suffering from disabilities provided they are able to safely participate in shed activities.

Through shared experiences members make friends, build a network of emotional support and develop a sense of belonging - all of which facilitate a willingness to communicate, often uncommon in men. The health and wellbeing aspect of the shed, particularly in terms of preventative health, is perhaps the greatest benefit.

The shed also provides an environment where productivity and being of value to the community can contribute to a man's feeling of self-worth and help to develop a sense of meaning and purpose following retirement, the loss of a loved one, job loss, or hardship.
