JOY Media (originally JOY 94.9) is Australia's first and only full-time community broadcaster for the LGBTIQA+ community. Supported by the dedication of over 200 volunteers and the passion and imagination of a small team of highly skilled staff, JOY Media gives all of its energy to connecting and communicating with our community. We are a non-profit organisation, self-funded by members, fundraising and sponsorships. We remain independent, ensuring our broadcast meets the needs of our community on air locally, and extending nationally and world-wide via DAB and online at www.joy.org.au.
We are passionate about supporting our diverse community and the need for an independent LGBTQIA+ Media service but we need community support to deliver consistent and relevant information and quality entertainment. After more than 30 years of broadcasting, it is hard to imagine there not being an LGBTIQA+ community media service that can be heard across Victoria and beyond..
The organisation has limited sources of income and depends on the generosity of its members and friends to fund some of the more costly items of expenditure. Some donate cash; others donate services, labour and professional services such as pro-bono legal advice. We use working but often superceded IT or broadcasting components, we subsidies of fees and provide scholarships to struggling community members to enable access to media training or business courses and we provide practical industry experience to young people at as small a cost as possible.
