Kinfolk Food Relief Appeal

Critical Support Needed for Kinfolk's Food Relief Program

Kinfolk is changing.

It's now official that our cafe at 673 Bourke Street in Melbourne will not reopen. Despite overwhelming support from our community, the pandemic has dealt a debilitating blow that we cannot bounce back from. The cafe that was home to our volunteer program for over 10 years has closed its doors for good.

But, the spirit of Kinfolk lives on! Our sister cafe Sibling in Carlton North is the new home of the volunteer program and our Events & Catering business continues to offer ethical events options to greater Melbourne. Any distributable profits from these ventures are now directed towards our growing food relief operations. In this climate, however, these profits are few and far between as our remaining businesses dip in and out of necessary but commercially disruptive lockdowns.

That's why we're appealing to you, our community, to contribute to the continuation of the food relief mission we started in 2020 and have maintained ever since. Every week we provide hundreds of nutritious and culturally appropriate meals, and 20+ kitchen restocks to Melbournians experiencing food insecurity. Many of our recipients (as referred to us by our partners in the community support space) are experiencing complex combinations of circumstances (like family violence or income loss) and conventional support systems are ill-equipped to provide for them.

Our food relief is made and assembled with nutritious, locally sourced ingredients and doesn't compromise on quality. We also allow the end-recipient to select the food most relevant to their household size and cultural preference through a custom-built ordering form. The anonymous feedback we've received from recipients thus far has been overwhelmingly positive, with many people telling stories of alleviated stress and amazement at the freshness and variety of produce provided.

Thanks to a Working For Victoria Grant, our food relief labour costs are funded through to October but we need community support to continue covering food costs. Your donation will help us make sure that more people can eat well, for good!

For context, a donation of $100 will allow us to provide approximately one whole kitchen restock - including fresh produce, home-made meals and essential pantry items.
