2021 Newcastle Writers Festival

Three weeks from our eighth festival in March 2020, we made the decision to cancel the event due to COVID-19 and in order to protect the health and safety of our guest writers, audience, volunteers and staff.

It was a devastating decision, but rather than dwell on the difficulties, festival director Rosemarie Milsom took the program online with a mix of live and pre-recorded author interviews and panel discussion. It was a first for the Australian writers festival community and a great success.

Like so many organisations, we had to make some tough decisions to get through 2020 but we are now looking to the future and organising our ninth Festival which will take place in September 2021.

We are keeping up to date with the latest health advice and working hard to ensure we can gather as a community to celebrate books and ideas.

Our Story

The Newcastle Writers Festival was founded in 2012, and connects stories and people across the Hunter region and beyond. In its short history, the Festival has become the city's premier cultural event. It is built on a foundation of goodwill and the enthusiasm of book-lovers of all ages.

In 2020 our authors and special guests adapted quickly to our online approach and we held interviews with Sophie Hardcastle, Ruby Hamad, Ash Grunwald and many more. Hosted on our YouTube channel and later turned into podcasts, thousands of people from all over the world were able to watch and listen.

In 2019, 11,000 people came along to enjoy the Festival, and heard from local and national writers such as Trent Dalton, Clementine Ford, Ben Quilty, Gillian Triggs and Michael Robotham.
Just under half the program is free. This is an important part of making the Festival accessible to as many people as possible. The Festival is also committed to fostering literacy and creativity among young people, and in 2019 3,000 primary school students in Newcastle and Cessnock participated in the Schools Program.

Newcastle Writers Festival is a not-for-profit entity governed by a volunteer management committee and supported by a team of 160 volunteers.
