Appeal to Support the Oolong Sanctuary

The Friends of Oolong are looking to reconstruct the entire eco-system of the Oolong habitat/remnants linked by corridors. The president has been managing the endangered Box Gum Grassy Woodlands (BGGW) project over 56 ha of Dalton Park on a program supported by the Federal Department of the Environment and extending over 15 years. Dalton Park and the Oolong sanctuary are a wildlife refuge.

Australia is going up in smoke!

Defence must take over the air control of bushfires from the National Aerial Firefighting Centre (NAFC) and secure an adequate number of Erickson Aircranes S64F equipped with a state of the art Night Vision Lighting System and Infra red(IFR) trained crew and pilots for continuous day and night operation to control any bushfire till extinguishing it and avoiding them from getting uncontrollable and worse becoming unpredictable. The ground control needs adequate air support by RAAF to cope with the increased number of lightning strikes.

Aircranes should be made in Australia to create a new industry and to supply our need. An average between 50,000 and 80,000 ha are burned with each uncontrollable fire.

Constituents from all states and territories should send petitions to their parliament members asking an enquiry with Productive Commission on percentage of allocation to the initial bushfires control by air and demanding a Royal Commission to assess the if present bushfire control is far above the capability of any civil organisation. The Government procures $81billion to build submarine to protect our sea what about adequately protecting our land in our perennial war to bushfires?

The Friends of Oolong will advertise in several newspapers to inform of the problems and how should be solved. We need donations to support the venture and to save our bush.

Our bush is in great danger and our goal is to protect and enhance the natural environment and cultural heritage of Oolong and all forests. Without your support, we will not be able to carry out important wetlands and woodland reconstruction work.

Key Areas of Expenditure

  • We need support to finance the venture of bushfire control and its changes to avoid bushfires to become more uncontrollable, unpredictable and catastrophic.
  • "Fund for Nature Reserves" to assist and promote the purchase of vegetation remnants of high nature heritage and conservation value.
  • We need to plant sever hundred tube stock of trees of the BGGW .
  • To provide funds for the construction, setting up, monitoring, maintenance and evaluation of the use of nest boxes by birds and other fauna in habitat/remnants.
