Pegasus, Riding for the Disabled

Pegasus Riding for the Disabled

Pegasus is a not-for-profit community organisation that has been operating in the Canberra Region for more than 40 years. It provides equestrian activities for people with disabilities. Pegasus brings horses and people together to help fulfil their potential.

Currently, Pegasus provides horse therapy programs to about 100 riders with a disability. Riding classes are structured based on ability. In total, over 270 volunteers give their time and expertise to Pegasus programs.

Benefits for participants of Pegasus programs range from horse riding being a fun and non-evasive social and therapeutic activity, to providing therapies that help to improve co-ordination, balance, muscle development and fitness for people with disabilities (such as Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Multiple Sclerosis and acquired brain injury). Participation boosts personal confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, leadership and trust. Parents, carers or caregivers also benefit from obtaining an hour or two a week of respite and are able to watch their children and/ or dependents develop and gain confidence in their abilities.

Support for Pegasus funds horse and rural activities for people with a disability. It maintains the upkeep of the horses, and enhances volunteer opportunities.
