Support LGBTIQ+ Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Australia

In January 2019, Pride Foundation Australia formed the LGBTQIA+ Asylum Seeker and Refugee Advisory group. Made up of people with lived experience of seeking asylum and/or refugee status, as well as people working in legal and community sectors, we have been working to identify the priority issues and find funding for solutions.

Our first priority: access to services

There is an urgent need for inclusion training and education across service providers that are accessed by LGBTIQA+ refugees and asylum seekers.

Despite the best of intentions, LGBTIQA+ people are still placed in shared housing with people that are hostile and abusive, or are unable to access LGBTIQA+ inclusive counselling because it is considered “too complicated” to find interpreters that are not considered a risk to confidentiality.

That’s why we want to develop training resources that can teach inclusive practice for services seeing LGBTIQA+ refugees and people seeking asylum.

They would be nationally available via an online platform, and completely free to access.

We need your help

We’ve crunched the numbers, and the total cost of developing these resources over 12 months is $20,000.

That includes a project coordinator, consultants, website development and hosting, and content.

We've already managed to raise over $11,000 dollars, over half the funds we need, and have been truly touched by how many people have gotten on board and shown their support. We offer our heartfelt thanks, and hope you can now help us by donating, and helping us spread the word.

What else will be in the resources?

These resources would be co-designed by people with lived experience and LGBTIQA+ specific service providers over 12 months.

There will be specific content for the unique issues refugees and people seeking asylum can face across:

  • Settlement
  • Legal issues
  • Health
  • Interpreters
  • Advocacy
  • Housing
  • Employment
  • LGBTQIA+ specific services

These resources would include tips on how to work effectively with interpreters, understanding sensitivity about confidentiality, the need for community connection, and supporting someone through having to prove a claim for protection.

Every dollar we receive will go to support our work in advancing equity for the most disadvantaged LGBTQIA+ Australians.

From developing national guidelines on LGBTQIA+ inclusion for the housing and homelessness sectors, to collaborating with universities and service providers to better support LGBTIQA+ people with disabilities, and providing seed funding for grassroots organsations all over the country, we have provided more than $540,000 in funds for projects directly benefiting and supporting vulnerable groups within the LGBTQIA+ community.

With your help, we can keep going.

PS: Every donation over $2 is tax deductible — We welcome corporate contributions too!
