May is Prader-Willi Syndrome International Awareness month, and the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association of Victoria (PWSA Victoria) is hosting its biggest annual fundraiser - the 15 for 15 Challenge.

The  15 for 15 Challenge takes its name from the actual Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) condition in which several genes on the 15th chromosome are deleted or unexpressed leading to individuals developing insatiable appetites, difficult behaviour traits and developmental problems.

The 15 for 15 self-challenge will raise awareness and funds for PWS and the money raised from this year’s challenge will be directed towards developing a desperately needed state-wide, evidence-based model of care for children living with Prader-Willi Syndrome. This model will ensure that children throughout the state receive consistent, effective and best medical care, treatments and support no matter where they live.

Led by Professor Katrina Williams at the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University in close consultation with Associate Professor Tom Connell from the Royal Children’s Hospital, the project aims for children with Prader‐Willi Syndrome and their families to begin life with all the right tools to live a full and healthy life. The program will be developed for implementation at both major Victorian paediatric hospitals (Monash Children’s Hospital and The Royal Children’s Hospital) with regional links.

This major fundraiser encourages people to set their own self-challenge and ask family and friends to sponsor them, or better still, join in and post their progress on social media. For those who can’t commit to a challenge but still want to support the amazing cause, a donation of $1.50, $15.00 or $150 is encouraged at any time throughout the challenge.

The Prader-Willi Syndrome Association of Victoria encourages people to take up the challenge to help continue to break down barriers and create a world where everyone with PWS has access to the right tools to enable them to live a full and inclusive life.
