Braille House

Raise the Dots 2019

Braille is a code that is made from a series of raised dots and allows people that are blind or have low vision to read.

Braille House is passionate about reading and equality. Through reading, people with low or no vision can get educated by learning spelling and grammar. Reading also means that these people can also comprehend the text and develop their creativity which helps to unlock opportunities for them to reach their full potential.

Braille House is a not-for-profit that produces resources for children and adults who are blind or have low vision, provides a library that houses over 14,700 volumes of Braille books and Magazines and services that extend to transcription, braille production (including maps) and braille tutoring.

The work of Braille House is important because for every 100 books a sighted child can access, a blind child has access to between 3 and 5 (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions). Children who are blind and have access to a wide range of resources in braille have a higher chance of finishing university and gaining employment (Journal of Blindness, Innovation and Research).

The vital resources Braille House provides to children, not only benefits those who are blind or have low vision through accessibility, inclusion and non-discrimination, but also benefits their peers who are sighted. When a blind child is reading the same text in similar format in the same environment as a sighted child, the benefits reach across both. The blind person doesn’t feel isolated, and the sighted person feels a stronger connection. This has wide reaching and long lasting impacts for the whole community as these people take this valuable lesson of acceptance and inclusion through the rest of their lives and also share their experiences with others.
