Inherited retinal diseases affect millions of people worldwide, causing loss of vision in adults and children alike. The many diseases within this group are caused by any of thousands of known genetic mistakes in more than 200 genes. These genetic mistakes, and therefore the diseases they cause, are inherited.
An individual may inherit a genetic mistake from a parent, and pass it down to their own children, completely unaware of this silent problem until a family member, be it adult or child, is diagnosed with a sight stealing disease. The roller coaster begins.
Based on current statistics, such inherited retinal diseases are the leading cause of youth blindness in Australia.
We are here for everyone affected by sight loss. Whether you’re losing your sight or you’re blind or partially sighted, our practical and emotional support can help you face the future with confidence.
As an Australian volunteer-led charity, Retina Australia funds world-leading research into treatments and cures for blindness caused by inherited retinal disease and cares for people and families through peer to peer support services. Through education and advocacy we work tirelessly to empower around 15,000 Australians who are living with blindness or vision impairment.
Thanks to our wonderful donors we have invested over $5 million in more than 40 research projects since 1983.
