RISE (Refugees, Survivors and Ex-Detainees)

RISE Queer Project

$

In Australia, queer refugees are one of the worst treated groups of people. We constantly have to face discrimination from different communities we are a part of, on top of the fact that our lives are often unsettled due to multiple traumas including the trauma of detention for eX-detainee queer refugees, the trauma of prolonged asylum-seeking process and case rejections, etc.

The RISE Queer Project is a newly established project that we have been quietly running in-house support services for RISE queer members since 2015. We have recently launched our project to garner more fundings and resources in order to meet growing demands from our queer members.

The RISE Queer Project aims to build a community that understands and addresses issues that concern our queer members; addressing racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia, border imperialism, and encouraging creative expression of our lives, experiences and potential. This project will be delivered using the self-determination model where queer refugee members are the only decision makers for any matter in relation to the Queer Project, with a philosophy that as queer refugees ourselves, we know our needs, our issues, what’s best for us and we should be the only ones who make any decisions about our lives and futures. We are seeking funding to be able to deliver this crucially-needed project in a way that is uniquely tailored to meet the demands of queer eX-detainees, asylum seekers and refugees.

By donating to the RISE Queer Project, you will be helping us to achieve FOUR main goals;

1. Develop long term queer project sustainability

2. Provide queer eX-detainees and refugees advocacy support and casework

3. Create resources and community directory for queer refugees, especially for eX-detainees

4. Hiring a project coordinator
