River's Gift

River's Gift - Great Ocean Road Running Festival 2019

River’s Gift was established in November 2011, to raise funds for research into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The charity was created in honour of River Jak Adam Waddell, son of Alex and Karl Waddell, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep.

River was a healthy and happy baby boy, with no symptoms of any illness. He was put to bed in his cot, on his back, on the night of the 6 November – he was slept safely as per the recommended guidelines, breastfed by Alex who didn’t drink or smoke - yet still fell victim to this devastating condition.

River’s Gift has grown rapidly over the past seven years and is now overseen by a Board of Directors. Additionally, it is supported by an Advisory Board and a number of dedicated volunteers. Having raised over $1 million to date, we’ve formed a solid Australian footprint in the world of SIDS Research.

Your fundraising and donation efforts will make a significant contribution to the funding of world leading research into the underlying causes of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). It’s with your contribution that we’re managing to fund early career Australian scientific researchers to apply their investigative research skills within the highly reputed laboratories at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard University, USA, and at Adelaide University here in Australia. With the further developed learnings and understanding of this tragic syndrome, the scientific experts will avidly pursue the development of testing and treatment to prevent the infants of our world having their lives cut so short. This is the impact that your charitable contribution is making!
