Support a Child

The Children of Burundi

Over 52% of children in rural areas of Burundi have been hit hard by poverty and disease, with many children losing parents in the previous civil war or due to poverty and malnutrition. Burundi is ranked 167 out of 177 countries in the 2008 Human Development index ( based 2005 data), and its infant and maternal mortality rates are among the worst in Africa. With most of the population living on less than $2 a day, Child-led families make up some of the most vulnerable residents in the region and struggle to gain direct financial support from their community due to endemic poverty.

Your support will enable us and our in-country partner to directly help these children with their ongoing needs such as supplying nutritious food, health care and vital vaccinations and assistance towards school fees and school materials. Where there are adults in the family or community supporting the children, we also support them with training on growing food and seed purchase, so that they can become more self-sufficient.

We believe that your support is important, not only to create financial support but also to create a sense of community and humanity. Supported children can exchange letters and even receive visits from their supporters, giving them an important sense of connection to the wider world. (Further Hope and our in-country partners can make arrangements for supporters wishing to visit their supported children in Burundi. These arrangements include airport pick-up, transportation, hotel reservations, and entry permit including visa. )
