South Sudan Hope Road Project

We are building a school for girls in South Sudan.

Zacharia Mawat Machiek is lucky to be alive. One of the "Lost Boys" of South Sudan, he spent years fleeing conflict and then eleven years in refugee camps before coming to Australia.

Deprived of his own primary school education, Zacharia is determined to help the children of his newly-independent country start their education. More than half the population of the country is less than 18 years old. Only 26% of the adult population is literate, a mere 17% of women, even less in the country where this school will be built.

Zacharia believes that education is the most powerful weapon to change conditions in South Sudan by enriching individual lives.

Who are we?

Zacharia is the founder and President of our organisation. We are Australian teachers, community workers, businesspeople and professionals helping Zacharia to achieve his dream of building schools in South Sudan.

The work of this organisation is completely voluntary and non-denominational.

In 2014, Zacharia walked for 40 days from the Queensland border to Sydney, to help raise funds to start the school. That walk is the subject of Tom Zubricki's brilliant documentary showing in cinemas in late 2017.

What you can do

We have so far raised sufficient funding to help start the construction of a primary school in the town of Abyei Achok, South Sudan.  With these resources the local community has already made 20,000 bricks and some infrastructure work has commenced.

We have detailed building plans prepared for a staged building program. Stage 1 will be 4 rooms,  teaching equipment, and water and sanitation services, essential if we are to provide a safe and healthy environment for young women and girls. To complete this phase we need a total of $AU85,000.

As at mid-September 2017, we have raised $45,000.

We envisage the school ultimately having 8 classrooms and a teacher's room/ administration office, togetherwith sports facilities. To complete this Phase 2 in coming years, expanding the school to meet the education needs of the regional area  we will need further funding.

This money is not a hand-out; it is a hand-up. No big Australian corporate sponsors fund this project for girls at the other side of the world. This school will only be built with the support of generous individual Australians. We need your help to raise the remainder of the funds to make Zacharia's dream come to fruition.
