Andrew Shaw Foundation

Andrew Shaw was a wonderful young Tasmanian who died as a result of an AIDS related illness in 1987. In Andrew's memory TasCAHRD and his family established the Andrew Shaw Foundation (ASF). The foundation is administered by TasCAHRD and is funded through various community activities, private donations and philanthropy. ASF offers financial assistance to people living with or directly affected by HIV, who are experiencing financial hardship.

Why are we needed?

• A third of Tasmanians living with HIV live below the poverty line, and many are socially or geographically isolated.
• Despite the dramatic advances in HIV testing and treatment there remains no cure or effective vaccine.
• Transmissions rates in Tasmania remain static, though requests for support via the Foundation are increasing.
• The ASF is the only emergency relief funding program for people living with HIV, and their carers in Tasmania.

How will the funds be used?

Andrew Shaw Foundation funds are used for the provision of material, emotional and social support to people living with HIV.

Andrew Shaw Foundation funds may be used used to:

• Provide direct financial aid to people living with or affected by HIV, and their families
• Deliver harm reduction and health promotion programs
• Support peer-led education and prevention initiatives
• Provide concelling and client support services
• Expand outreachto priority and underserved communities
• Strengthen peer workforce training and capability
• Improve access to care and reduce service barriers
• Promote HIV prevention through PrEP, condom use, and the normalisation of regular sexual health testing
