Thornbury Primary School

"Roaring into the Arts"

Thornbury is a small school (population 145) with a very mixed group of students. 61% of our families come from low socio economic backgrounds where assistance is provided via the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). 40% of our population are indigenous.

Our proposal is for the whole school to attend a matinee performance of the "The Lion King" that is opening at The Regent Theatre on July 28th. Students from our school have limited opportunities to attend live theatre events such as 'The Lion King' due to the prohibitive costs involved for our families. Anecdotally only two students have been to a large theatrical experience.

The opportunity to attend live theatre on such a grand scale, would I'm sure, inspire our students in a variety of ways. There would be the opportunity for follow up work in literacy, music, drama and the visual arts. Also our unique Indigenous Studies classes could link the theme of African and Australian culture.
