Thyroid WA Support Group Inc. has helped hundreds of people with thyroid conditions since 2006.
Thyroid disease is very common, it affects all aspects of well being and it can affect anyone; male or female and at all ages. There is no cure for thyroid disease. Thyroid hormone is essential for good health. When the thyroid is no longer producing enough thyroid hormone, then this hormone must be replaced. We cannot live without it.
The thyroid gland helps regulate body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, body growth and metabolism , the rate at which food is turned into energy. Thyroid hormone is also part of the brain chemistry and controls mood, emotion, cognition, appetite and behavior therefore the symptoms experienced, can be numerous and varied. The symptoms often mimic other conditions, making the disease hard to detect. As thyroid disease is often misunderstood, misdiagnosis is very common. The symptoms of hypothyroidism are often treated with unnecessary drugs, such as cholesterol lowering drugs and antidepressants for depression and anxiety while the real culprit, the ailing thyroid, is often overlooked.
Common thyroid disorders are hypothyroidism (also known as an underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (known as an overactive thyroid). An underactive thyroid can cause infertility and miscarriages, while research has shown that low levels of thyroid hormone in a pregnant mother can cause developmental problems and learning difficulties in the baby.
Early detection of thyroid cancer has a very good prognosis. Specialist care is required for thyroid cancer patients.
Early detection of thyroid disease, correct diagnosis and treatment can improve the patients' quality of life. Symptoms such as fatigue, depression, weight issues, poor libido, mood swings and mental confusion, amongst many others, impact greatly on work and family life.
Thyroid WA Support Group Inc. promotes AWARENESS, SUPPORT and ADVOCACY for better thyroid function, not only for the patient, but the whole community.
