Transcend Australia

Transcend Australia is making sure that trans, non-binary and gender diverse young people are embraced and given every opportunity to thrive.

How we do this

We provide peer support, information and resources to parents and carers to equip them with the confidence, knowledge and connections that can help them support their young person.

We mentor and empower trans, non-binary and gender diverse people to raise their voices and contribute to changing systems of discrimination.

We deliver capacity building and advice to a range of workplaces and providers to help develop policies and processes where trans, non-binary and gender diverse young people feel safe and included.

What is the problem

Trans, non-binary and gender diverse young people deserve to express themselves freely, without discrimination or bullying, and to access the healthcare that they need. However, without a supportive and accepting family, they face multiple barriers.

Family conflict and rejection because of gender identity is a major cause of homelessness and poor health and wellbeing outcomes for trans communities.

57.9% of trans people surveyed in Trans Pathways experienced abuse within their family.

80% of homophobic bullying occurs at school.

Trans Pathways found that 48.1% of young trans people have attempted suicide. The rates of anxiety, eating disorders, and self-harm are significantly high in young trans people because of low levels of acceptance, rejection, bullying, discrimination and lack of access to healthcare.

Our impact

  • 74% of parents or carers note they want to connect with other parents, carers or peer support. Closely followed by receiving support in understanding trans experiences.
  • 80% of parents or carers say they are able to find the answers they needed through our services.
  • 85% of families who receive support from Transcend report a significant increase to their level of confidence, knowledge and understanding of how to support their trans, non-binary or gender diverse child.
  • During anti-trans events, our demand for support and services as well as requests for commentary and advice triples.
  • In 2022, we provided over 1,500 hours of peer support to families, with a similar trend in 2023.

With your donations, we can ensure that:

  • Information and resources can be downloaded, kept up to date, and provided for free for families who need them and we can develop more accessible resources to meet the needs of a diverse community;
  • We can expand our youth leadership activities to grow their visibility and facilitate social connections;
  • We can launch more support groups in all of Australia;
  • Our advocacy work can remain independent and meets the needs of those that need it most.
