Home is Where the Heart is

Our 2021 Annual Support campaign is live!

In 1982, the Twenty10 housing refuge was created by a group of passionate community volunteers in response to a marked increase in young LGBTIQA+ homeless people in and around Sydney. It was named after the Darlinghurst postcode where the original housing refuge was located, 2010.

Today, we provide a broad range of free, accessible mental health and psychosocial support programs, as well as creative and digital programs, events and safe spaces so that LGBTIQA+ people of NSW are secure, connected and celebrated. We are also the NSW State Partner for QLife, Australia’s free, anonymous peer support service and we deliver specialist capacity building training to services all over New South Wales.

Although the services we provide have the greatest impact and reach we have ever had – our work is far from over.

The recently released Writing Themselves in 4, The Health and Wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ Young People in Australia*, NSW Summary Report found;

  • 21.8% of participants had experienced one or more forms of homelessness in their lifetime, 10.5% in the last 12 months
  • 27% reported that their experience/s of homelessness were related to being LGBTIQA+
  • 39.9% had self-harmed within the past 12 months
  • 58.9% of all participants had seriously considered attempting suicide in the previous 12 months, and over one-quarter 26.2% of all participants and 27.1% of those aged 16-17 had attempted suicide in their lifetimes
  • 10.2% had attempted suicide in the last 12 months and 26.2% had done so at some point in their lifetime.

This research data tells us that now, as much as ever, young LGBTIQA+ people in NSW need the specialist support of services such as Twenty10. With your support this financial year, we can continue to grow our mental health support services, our services for regional young people and for those living in Western Sydney.

This year in collaboration with local artist Luke John Matthew Arnold, our campaign HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS celebrates safer spaces and acknowledges Twenty10’s continuous service provision, so much of which is made possible through the support of our partners, volunteers and donors. All donations of $300 and over receive an A3 limited edition, archival giclée artist print.

Please consider giving generously by June 30. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
