Unlocked is an innovative educational program developed and run by The Red Room Company in collaboration with educational staff from NSW Correctional Centres, which unlocks the creative potential of inmates through the transformative power of poetry.
This project reaches some of Australia's most disadvantaged and marginalised groups, empowering them through a new "no rules" approach to literacy and communication, and self-expression.
Launched in 2010, Unlocked takes Australian poets into the centres to run intensive writing workshops. Inmates experiment with language; writing and editing their own poems, sometimes illustrating them and setting them to music. The poems are then collected into a professionally designed print and audio anthology available to other centres, inmates, family and friends, and for sale through our website.
Unlocked poet Lindsay Tuggle has said: "As both a university educator and a poet, I can honestly say that this was the most significant teaching experience of my career."

With more funding, we hope to expand the project into more centres, and eventually into other states across the country.
