Donate to West Welcome Wagon (WWW) and directly support asylum seekers
in Melbourne's West.
What do we do?
We help asylum seeker families receive good quality donated household goods and essential food supplies. Our community of supporters donate much needed items such as beds, cooking pots, children's items and food. Our volunteers provide neighbour to neighbour social support as well as special projects such as English tutoring, emergency food relief and draught proofing homes. Help us make our new neighbours feel welcome.
Who are asylum seekers?
Asylum seekers are escaping persecution in their home countries. The majority of asylum seekers we assist are on Bridging Visas with limited work rights and an income below that of the lowest Centrelink payment.
Why do we need a warehouse?
Volunteer coordinators previously opened their homes to accept, clean and sort donated goods. This model was not sustainable.
Sadly, we had to regularly turn down donations simply because we could not fit items in our coordinator's homes. We also had to turn down the helping hands offered by our many willing volunteers due to the health and safety concerns of working in cramped storage spaces.
What is our goal?
We need to reach more people who urgently need our help. West Welcome Wagon supports more than 550 asylum seeker households from 20 countries. If we can more readily accept and distribute donation then we can help many more people. Benefits of a WWW warehouse:
To enable us to be more proactive in sourcing seasonal goods (e.g. heaters for winter)
To improve the efficiency of the collection and delivery of donations
To provide a physical space for volunteers to accept donations and enable more volunteers to join us in organising and packing donated goods
To better facilitate volunteer meetings and working bees
What is our target?
Our target is to reach $33,000 to pay for a year's rent for a warehouse for WWW. If your generous donations go over the target amount, the money will to go towards electricity, water, gas, insurance and future rent.
Please note that WWW is not aligned with any political or religious organisation. Our costs are funded fully from donations and applicable grants. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
"WWW fosters an important sense of community spirit in that it provides ways of linking local families to those who are newly arrived." Mia McGregor Founder
