This is the same gene responsible for producing the dystrophin protein, in charge of maintaining muscle cell structure and function. Duchenne occurs due to a mutation in the dystrophin gene, consequently the protein is not produced. As a result, muscles are not able to function or repair themselves properly, over time this compromises muscle function completely.
