Wingate Avenue Community Centre (Wingate) is located on one of the largest public housing estates in Melbourne situated in the LGA of Moonee Valley. It services approx. 1700 residents in 860 multi-storey walk-up apartment blocks on 77 acres of land.

Of the 1,700 residents there is a strong Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) demographic, with more than 70% born in other countries including Ethiopia (11.9%), Vietnam (7.3%), Somalia (6%) and Sudan (4.8%).

The average income is $414 per week, compared to $1,490 in the surrounding suburb of Ascot Vale. More than 80% of the residents are unemployed, almost 30% are on a disability pension and around 20% are single parents.

How will the funds be used:

Funds raised will go towards the development and expansion of existing social, recreation and educational programs. We are currently building a robust men's and women's program that will provide support and build confidence and reduce social isolation and in turn assist those to find employment. Throughout recent years, the centre has seen such a significant growth in patronage in all services and many of these have been stretched to capacity due to a lack of finance. Staff and volunteers are deeply committed to supporting and developing this community and all monies raised will go towards this mission.
