Youth Empowerment Against HIV and AIDS

Agents of YEAH at the AIDS Conference 2014

Agents of YEAH' is a sexual health peer education training program that supports young people to develop knowledge and leadership skills. Agents of YEAH deliver workshops and promote sexual health through youth events in their local communities.

The program is run by YEAH, Australia's only national youth-led sexual health not-for-profit. Since late 2009, YEAH has established Agents of YEAH peer education groups in Darwin, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Each group is made up of 15-20 trained volunteer peer educators (Agents) aged between 17-29. Peer educators also play a pivotal role in building connections with local youth services, schools and universities to explore opportunities to collaborate on local events.

The Agents of YEAH training provides comprehensive information over a two day intensive training program . Topics covered include: STIs and HIV/AIDS, sexual health, peer education skills and how to put these skills into practice. The inclusive and youth led style of the program attracts a diverse group of youth participants who unite as young people with a common goal to lead a positive response to youth sexual health.

We're so proud of our Agents of YEAH; they're a group of dedicated, hard working young volunteers who do not receive any monetary benefit from their work leading sexual health education amongst their peers.

In July 2014, Melbourne will be host AIDS 2014. The 20th International AIDS Conference is the primary global gathering for those who work in many fields related to HIV and AIDS and the largest health conference in the world. It is estimated that almost more than 20,000 delegates, representing every country in the world, will converge on Melbourne next July.

We would love to see the Agents of YEAH given the amazing and once in a lifetime opportunity to attend AIDS 2014 while it is in their home country, but unfortunately YEAH are not in a position to do so. That's why we need your help to support these dedicated young Australians to attend AIDS 2014!

Sending an Agent to the conference would not only be an incredible experience for each individual but will also have a positive effect on their local communities. The Conference will give Agents the chance to enhance their knowledge about the global epidemic and bring that expertise back into their local work as peer educators. They will create worldwide networks and be able to bring an international perspective to their work here in Australia. The high profile nature of the event will further inspire and enhance their commitment to continue as community leaders working towards an HIV and AIDS Free Generation.

YEAH is volunteering as the lead Australian youth organisation leading the development of the Youth Program at AIDS 2014. Working with conference organisers we have estimates that it will cost $1000 to send one Agent of YEAH to the conference including flights, accommodation and registration fees. Whether you're part of a big corporation that could contribute $5,000 to send five young people to the conference, or a group of 10 colleagues who can each contribute $100 to get young person there, your contribution is valuable.

We would love to send 20 young peer educators (Agents) from Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin, Perth and Melbourne to the AIDS 2014 Conference.

Please join YEAH and help us in our efforts to raise the support needed to send 100 young Australians who are already volunteering their time to improve the health of their communities this once in a lifetime opportunity!
