YWCA of Canberra - Emergency Food Relief

Research tells us that in 2011 there were more than 25,000 disadvantaged people living in the ACT, more than 20,000 people were living in poverty, and 14,000 were experiencing financial stress.

The YWCA of Canberra's dedicated staff and volunteers know all too well the increasing numbers of people accessing our services and programs, and the pressure to provide them with the support they need.

Our Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre is one such service, where young people and families from the Lanyon and South Tuggeranong region can access quality recreational activities and education programs to strengthen and build their well being, resilience, and community participation.

An important part of the Centre is our Food Hub, a pantry-like system where people in need can access free, healthy, nutritious food.

Unfortunately, this year the demand on our emergency food relief has doubled, which sees us struggling to provide for up to 100 people every week.

At the YWCA of Canberra we believe that COMMUNITIES should be safe and connected, and that EVERYBODY has the right to self-determination and empowerment.

You can help ensure that the people visiting the Lanyon Food Hub do not leave empty handed.

You can help disadvantaged families, children, women, men, and the elderly across Canberra by donating now!
  • $10 will buy a family of four breakfast
  • $50 will buy a family of four lunch including school lunches for the children
  • $100 will buy a family of four dinner as well as necessary toiletry items for several weeks
