The Charlie Perkins Trust partners with the Aurora Education Foundation to deliver the Charlie Perkins Scholarship, awarded to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians who have the potential to become leaders in their field of study and in their communities.
Launched in 2009 in memory of Dr Charlie Perkins, the first Aboriginal Australian university graduate, the Charlie Perkins Scholarships support two Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians each year to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. In 2011, with support from the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust, the Scholarships also became available for study at the University of Cambridge. In a historic moment in 2025, the Charlie Perkins Scholarship was awarded to the two first-ever Torres Strait Islander students to study at Oxford University.
The Charlie Perkins Scholarship breaks down the financial barriers associated with studying abroad by covering up to three years of university and college fees, travel costs and an annual stipend to cover living expenses.
Fifteen years ago, there had never been an Indigenous Australian studying full-time at Oxford or Cambridge. Since then, more than 30 Charlie Perkins Scholars have graduated from Oxford or Cambridge. You can read more about each scholar's journey here.
