About 4nature

4nature is a volunteer-based conservation group established in 2010 that seeks to protect the natural environment of Australia and the South Pacific.

We operate strategically, targeting areas where we can quickly make a big difference. We closely collaborate with local partners to ensure we are stronger together.

Our causes

  • Mining in the Lithgow area
Coal mines and a power station near Lithgow west of Sydney are polluting Sydney's drinking water and damaging endangered wetlands and unique pagoda formations.

In 2015, 4nature took the owners of Springvale coal mine and the NSW government to court to stop them polluting Sydney’s drinking water. While we ultimately won the case in 2017, NSW Parliament passed special legislation allowing the mine to keep operating and permenantly exempting all existing coal mines in Sydney's drinking water catchments from strict water quality rules. In a positive move, a treatment plant was built to clean mine water discharges from Springvale mine, which began operating in 2019.

Today, these coal mines continue to expand their operations without strict water quality rules. The water treatment plan is not fully utilised, and untreated water continues to pollute Sydney's drinking water through legal loopholes and poor regulatory oversight.

4nature is working with environmentalists through the Gardens of Stone Alliance to assist with a strategic approach to this complex and important problem.

  • Solomon Islands
Since 4nature was formed in 2010, 4nature has supported the efforts of landholders on Kolombangara Island in the western province of the Solomon Islands. Its primary focus is the protection of a 20,000 hectare conservation area on Kolombangara Island.

Each year 4nature raises funds for conservation scholarships that support Kolombangara Island parents pay for their school fees, lowering their reliance on logging income. Since 2011, 4nature has raised over $85,000 to support the scholarship program.

  • Addressing global drivers of invasive species
The spread of invasive species around the world is driven by increasing global trade and travel.  Invasive species are responsible for 60% of global extinctions and cost the world's economy $423 billion. In Australia they are the main animal extinction driver and the problem continues to worsen. Despite this there are few independent environmental voices in international forums to drive change.

4nature is identifying the main opportunities for change in the complex international system of agreements and trade rules, including the WTO and the Convention of Biological Diversity. Over 2025, 4nature will develop a global collaboration to seek more rapid reform to build greater awareness of the problem, limit invasive species pathways and address major funding deficiencies in developed and developing countries alike.
