Since 2010 the 4nature conservation scholarships have been helping the people of Kolombangara Island in the Solomon Islands to preserve their forests and provide quality education for their children.
But the hard-won benefits of this scholarship program can only continue with annual funding. Logging companies are still pushing the Kolombangara community for access to their upland forests. And the costs of education are still a major challenge for many Kolombangara Islanders. Please help keep this successful program going!
We are seeking to raise AU$15,000 by May 2024 to help fund our contribution to this innovative and essential conservation program.
About the Conservation Scholarships
The idea is simple. By providing landholders with a scholarship to pay for part of their children's school fees, we're providing funds that may otherwise be sourced from logging their forests. By educating the island's students, were giving them a future with greater job prospects.
Each scholarship provides about AU$125 for a Kolombangara student's education (about $700 Solomon Islands dollars). We also fund vocational students, and up to 10 university scholarships costing AU$700.
Scholarships are paid directly to the student's school to cover educational costs such as books, writing materials, furniture.
Scholarships are offered to high school, vocational and university students, ages 12-20 years, who have at least one parent from Kolombangara Island.
Our target this year is to raise $15,000 for 100 student scholarships.
To ensure that all islanders are aware of the scholarship program and the application process, 4nature also provides KIBCA with basic support up to AU$1,000 to fund expenses such as advertising, printing and travel costs for visits to local villages.
How many standard scholarships can you fund? 1=$125 2=$250 3=$375 5=$625 10=$1250. Consider also supporting a university-level scholarship by adding $700.
Our partners
We are proud to be partnering with KIBCA (the local Kolombangara Island Biodiversity Conservation Association), KFPL (the island's forestry plantation company), Wildlife Conservation Society and the Natural Resources Development Foundation. KFPL, WCS and NRDF support the work of KIBCA.
