About this cause

We're an independent, 100% volunteer-run reference library of donated materials, based in Rosewood, Queensland.

Your generosity will:

* support our routine operational costs (housing, electricity, insurance),

* contribute to ongoing setup and maintenance costs (such as building new bookcases, maintaining our gardens on the premises), and

* assist our projects and programs (e.g. displays in the community, touring exhibitions, monthly events with music, film, readings, performances).

Some more about us....

We are a volunteer-run library and arts organisation that collects, preserves, houses, makes accessible and promotes items relating to Australian arts and culture. Our mission is for everyone to be connected to culture.

We provide access to local and national Australian and neighbouring cultures’ art and cultural artefacts and to build a community ethic where these materials and their creators - past and present - are recognised and valued.

Our organisation was established in 2012 by a small group of musicians and artists. Initially operating out of one rented room in Toowoomba, it was borne of a desire to learn more about Australian arts and culture for the purpose of incorporating newly-unearthed influences into living arts practice.

With donations from the public coming in from the very first day, the operation has now grown substantially. We hold more than 80,000 items of Australian and neighbouring cultures’ artefacts and books – about music, film, visual arts, performing arts, literature, history, humanities, arts education and more; from the well-known to the rare and obscure. Holdings include contemporary & historic books, zines, sheet music, music recordings, films, t-shirts, posters and artworks. The collection is held in a historic Queenslander and large hall in Rosewood, Queensland, on bookcases custom-built by our hard-working volunteers.

Many items in our collection were saved from destruction. We've observed that there is widespread de-accessioning of physical resources from local, regional, state and national libraries. Materials that are recognised by arts and cultural sector leaders as being culturally significant are sometimes not able to be incorporated into government libraries or archives. There is a lot of passion in the community for cultural preservation but in some cases, the public is not willing to donate artefacts to government-affiliated institutions. To offer an alternative, we do not receive government funding for our core operations so we mostly rely on donations from supporters like you, to collect and house our materials and to put on events for promoting Australian arts and culture.

We're a registered charity with the Australian Charities & Not-for-profits Commission (you can find our financial statements online, https://www.acnc.gov.au/charity/charities/46fe9aad-3aaf-e811-a962-000d3ad24a0d/documents/) and your generous donation is tax-deductible.
