The experiences of most children who are removed from their homes for their own safety are unimaginable for most of us. While many take with them from their homes deeply traumatic experiences and stresses, the majority of them are not able to take any of their belongings. A Better Life For Foster Kids estimates 85% of children removed from their homes and placed into out of
home care with foster or kinship carers arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.
A Better Life For Foster Kids (ABLFFK) works to improve short and long-term physical, educational and psycho-social outcomes for children in foster care and kinship care. Our aim is to preserve children’s dignity, improve their feelings of self-worth and lessen social stigma. We provide material assistance to children in care, as well as advocacy and support for carers to help them navigate the out of home care system.
Based in Gippsland, Victoria, A Better Life for Foster Kids was founded in 2014 by Heather Baird, who herself grew up in foster care.
ABLFFK is unique in providing Crisis Cases, which contain all the clothing and essential items required for the first week of care, where and when they are needed by carers, without administrative red tape.
As a small but growing non-profit with an enormous amount of community and volunteer support, each year we have been able to provide Crisis Cases to approximately 15% of the children in out of home care in Victoria.
It costs around $155 to create and deliver each Crisis Case, and they are packed with close to $375 worth of items.
