‘For a long time, I did not see how my art, or my voice matters. It wasn’t until the first public showing of the production [Signal: A Theatrical Mixtape] that I realised when I create work that is authentically myself, someone else in the audience feels seen. I found a community in this process.’
— Tsz Tung 'Nicky' Li
My name is Tsz Tung ‘Nicky’ Li, and I am a Hong-Kong-born multidisciplinary artist who has been a part of ActNow Theatre’s creative community since 2019 .
ActNow Theatre is a brilliant organisation offers crucial professional support for emerging queer POC artists like myself, and I want to share with you the very real impact they’ve had on me.
I recently completed ActNow’s Fringe MakeSpace Residency and Signal: A Theatrical Mixtape was born. Presented as part of the Adelaide Fringe, it set out to challenge our perceptions of reality, advocate for human rights in my home city and for representation in the creative industries.
I am also privileged to be a part of ActNow's inaugural Cultural Leaders program. It is providing me with the professional training to extend the community support that ActNow has afforded me, to others who are seeking it.
I want to create a safe space for people who are struggling to position themselves within their communities. It is hard to find a place where we belong, it is even harder when you are still figuring out who you are.
All this is to say that ActNow Theatre has given me, and many other marginalised artists like me, the opportunity, agency and freedom to create our own work the way that we want to.
Please consider supporting the work that this incredible organisation does with a tax-deductible contribution. Every little bit helps and creates more opportunities for artists whose voices we need to hear!
Best regards,
Tsz Tung ‘Nicky’ Li
