Do you remember taking a peanut butter sandwich to school? Unfortunately, due the dramatic increase in allergy and other immune diseases, nuts are just one of many foods banned from our schools.
Allergies and other disorders of the human immune system are now amongst the fastest growing chronic and complex health conditions affecting 1 in 4 people in Australia. They impose a significant economic cost on the individual, the health care system and society as a whole.
Despite having world-class researchers in these fields, funding for research into allergic diseases, immunodeficiencies and other immune diseases in Australia has been difficult to obtain.
AIFA was established in 2013 as a charitable initiative of the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) to fund awareness and research into these diseases. Senior immunology and allergy clinicians and scientists serve on our volunteer grant review panel ensuring that the best possible research projects receive funding.
We fund research that extends across all allergy and immune diseases and focus on funding projects that will lead to positive patient outcomes like the better detection of disease, strategies for prevention, improved treatments and potential cures.
