SUPPORTING BURNS TREATMENT AND CARE AT THE ALFRED

The Victorian Adult Burns Service at The Alfred is the state-wide provider of burns care for all adults with complex major burn injuries in Victoria, as well as many people with less severe burns.

The burns service at The Alfred provides acute care for severely injured burns victims, rehabilitation services, outpatient services for people with minor burns and training for other clinicians, especially those based in rural areas.

The Victorian Adult Burns Service has been there to care for those injured in:

  • Ash Wednesday
  • The Bali bombings, seven patients were airlifted to The Alfred
  • Black Saturday, where 20 people were admitted from the bushfire stricken communities for urgent, life-saving treatment

Each year the Alfred admits over 300 burns patients and cares for 1000 outpatients, with about 60 patients requiring Intensive Care.

Key Areas of Expenditure

Funding the state-of-the-art equipment and research that ensures the unit is able to fulfil its role as a state-wide service and leader in all aspects of burns care.
