Real and purposeful lifestyle choices for people in an intellectual disability are becoming a reality. More and more, people are participating in main-stream community life, as they choose to continue their education beyond secondary school, obtain employment, make a commitment to volunteering work, follow their passion through the arts or settle into a home environment with a 'life partner'. At Alkira, we are endeavouring to support people as they choose their pathway through life. For the 2010/2011 financial year Alkira's Board of Management made a serious commitment to provide those supports necessary for people who use our services to fulfill their life's choices. An amount of over $500,000 has been committed above any government funding and other budgeted streams of income Alkira may have, to enable such lifestyle choices to become a reality. Some of the programs and facilities that support these lifestyle choices are:
