Our end of financial year appeal is underway and we are seeking tax-deductible donations to assist in a facelift for our treasured lift, which will turn 100 in just four years.

In 2023 we had the motor and internal workings of the lift completely redone, which has led to greater reliability and a much quieter lift. We are now hoping to resurface and paint the metal external doors on each level to significantly improve the appearance of the lift, which is popular with both members and visitors.

The lift is one of only two of its vintage in Melbourne and is admired for its decorative and stylish interior. It contains simple arched panels of wood inlay, original polished metal signs and an elegant domed light. 

Founded in 1839, the Melbourne Athenaeum is one of the city's oldest cultural institutions. Its Collins St location housed the city's first official library, art gallery, museum and exhibition space.
