Australian Childhood Foundation is a leading specialist provider of therapeutic programs for children who have experienced abuse-related trauma. It currently runs these programs in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia. At any one time, there are more than 600 children and young people and their carers or families engaged in therapeutic intervention with the Foundation. ACF also has 21 partnerships with other non-government organisations to support direct trauma-based therapeutic programs for children and young people, including Oz Child (VIC), UnitingCare Gippsland (VIC), Barnados (ACT), Salvation Army (VIC and TAS), Anglicare (SA and VIC), Relationships Australia (NT), Centrecare (WA) and UnitingCare West (WA).
The Foundation is a Registered Training Organisation and runs national professional education and workforce development programs focused on child abuse and trauma. It reaches more than 6000 professionals each year nationally.
The Foundation runs a range of workforce development programs for a number of state and territory government departments in Australia including Education Departments in South Australia, where it has run the SMART (Strategies for Managing Abuse Related Trauma) Program for the last 6 years across SA, in the Northern Territory where is replicated the SMART Program across schools in the NT, and has a contract with the Tasmanian Department of Education to implement a similar initiative statewide addressing the issues of engagement and disconnection in secondary school. The Foundation has also run workforce development programs for child protection staff and managers in Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.
The Foundation runs a range of national community awareness and child abuse prevention initiatives. These have included Play Your Part and Stop Child Abuse Now campaigns. It now runs and manages the Safeguarding Children Program, having integrated the functions of the Australian Council for Children and Youth Organisations (ACCYO) in 2009. It has the active support of a number of high-profile Patrons and Ambassadors, including Chris Hemsworth, Liam Hemsworth, Nadine Gardiner, Stefan Dennis and Rosie Batty.
The Foundation's parenting support program has distributed more than 1.5 million parenting education booklets nationally and implemented a national network of parenting education groups through its Bringing Up Great Kids Program.
The Foundation also conducts research into child abuse and trauma in partnership with Monash and Deakin Universities. It has provided policy and program consultancy for a number of state government departments about trauma-informed practice for children, families and carers, and was awarded the National Violence Prevention Award in 1998 and the National Child Protection Award in 2005.
