Every donation you make here is more than money. It's a step towards closing a gap that should not exist.
The health disparity facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia is stark. Almost half of Indigenous men and over a third of women die before they turn 45. At all ages, Indigenous life expectancy is lower than for non-Indigenous Australians, on average, 8 to 9 years shorter.
Those numbers are hard to sit with. But sitting with them is exactly what we need to do, because understanding the reality is the first step towards changing it.
Deadly Choices was created by community, for community. It takes a strength-based approach, one that empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to move beyond statistics and make healthy choices for themselves and their families.
In Aboriginal slang, if something is 'deadly', it's great. A Deadly Choice is a good choice, and this is what Closing the Gap looks like in action, driven from the position of community control. That means quitting smoking or vaping, eating nutritious food, staying active, and connecting with local Community Controlled Health Services for an annual health check.
Simple choices. Profound impact.
In 2024/25 alone, Deadly Choices ran 9 events across Queensland, reaching over 2,800 participants and more than 5,500 community members. Your donation will help them reach even further, into new areas, with more events, more health checks, and more positive outcomes
