About this cause

Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA is a unique Western Australian clinical research centre. We provide state of the art in house and pharmaceutical trials right here in Perth. As a registered charity, we undertake high quality research through our Breast Clinical Trials Unit, conducting both large international trials and design in house patient relevant research.

We are the busiest clinical trials unit in Australia and we are unique that we are Clinician founded and driven organisation.

Thanks to the generosity of the WA community, Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA can offer these services free of charge. Being in a clinical trial, also ensures that patients receive the most up-to-date management and can potentially increase the survival of some patients. This all contributes to the future care of other women and men diagnosed with breast cancer.

How will the funds be used?

  • Funding will allow us to continue our in house clinical research to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and support for women and men with breast cancer. Since 2000 we've had 936 patients entered into 57 trials here in our Breast Clinical Trials Unit. This has allowed to access to new drugs, funding for tests and increased contact staff for follow-up. From these trials, 163 patients received a 50% higher chance of cure. We had the highest recruitment globally with 435 patients in 12 trials accessing new drugs that were unavailable to other patients.
  • Our Breast cancer specific tumour bank called the Helen Sewell Tumour Bank.  It is a first in Western Australia. These samples will provide important future clinical research that will help in the better diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer patients.
  • Chemotherapy-associated hair loss is one of the most debilitating side effects of chemotherapy for women with breast cancer. Our aim is to give patients with breast cancer the opportunity to avoid losing their hair during chemotherapy treatment. This cold cap device will focus on its effectiveness across different types of chemotherapy.
  • We aim to further the global knowledge of breast cancer and its treatments through our clinical trials and encourage Perth based researchers outside of our organisation to apply for our annual research grants. These focus on improving patient centred care and practices.

Key areas expenditure

  • In-house clinical trials
  • Tumour Bank
  • Cold Caps
  • Research Grants for Perth based researchers
