Your donation will help us to maintain and develop our services to support vulnerable people across the community, be they children at risk of abuse or neglect, women dealing with domestic violence or older people living with dementia. The Benevolent Society believes that building stronger communities is the best way to reduce social and economic disadvantage.
Why our work is so vital:-
- A child is reported abused every 13 minutes in Australia - we are working to ensure that children are safe, and remain with their families wherever possible. Providing high quality family support enables us to make sure we are there to stop problems escalating, and to seek the best possible start in life for young children. We support parents with counselling, household advice and parenting skills as well as supporting activities for children such as playgroups, holiday activities and therapy when needed.
- 30% of Australian women have experienced violence at some stage in their life - we help women to recover from domestic violence and move beyond it, so they can establish new lives for themselves and their children. We provide counselling and advocacy as well as practical support such as IT training to help women return to employment.
- Dementia affects 1 in 4 Australians - with people living longer, dementia is becoming increasingly prevalent and we are working to enable older people to live independently for as long as possible, with a focus on community support rather than residential care. We run home visiting services for the elderly, and respite care options for their carers, as well as residential care where it is needed.
- We know that change takes time, and we're committed to the long term. Building stronger communities where people feel safe and connected, and have access to opportunity is the best way to achieve positive and lasting change.
Your support will make a difference:
- $30 would support play therapy work to help children talk about and deal with their experience of abuse
- $50 would buy materials for an art group for women who have experienced domestic violence, to help them to discover skills and make new connections with others
- $100 would create a Reminiscence Kit for an older person with dementia to share their memories with family visitors
