About this cause

Too many children in Western Australia grow up without access to high-quality creative experiences because of geography, cost, transport barriers or lack of opportunity.

When creativity becomes optional:

  • wellbeing support becomes uneven
  • belonging becomes fragile
  • and the future skills young people need — creativity, collaboration and resilience — become concentrated in the few places with resources.

Barking Gecko Arts (BGA) changes this by combining:

  • world-class theatre
  • school programs
  • creative learning residencies
  • festivals and community experiences
  • regional touring

So that children don’t just watch the arts - they belong in it!

In 2025 alone:

  • 95,050 children, families and educators participated in BGA experiences across WA.
  • 7,493 students received subsidised tickets and transport support to attend performances.
  • 75% of school audiences required subsidy to attend.
  • 70% of engagement happened outside inner metro Perth.

Children reported:

  • 70% increased confidence
  • 65% stronger empathy
  • 80% teachers observed wellbeing improvements

Creativity is often the moment a child realises they have a voice.

In the 2025 BGA production, Reasons to Stay Inside, children were given a safe and imaginative space to explore complex emotions such as anxiety, fear and connection.

One student reflected:
“I learned I was not the only one with these big feelings.”

These experiences are not incidental.

They are foundational to how children understand themselves, relate to others, and imagine their future.

With sustained investment, these moments can reach thousands more children across Western Australia.

There are many ways to make a difference:

  • $2-$50: Spark It
Creative supplies that enable hands on learning experiences in classrooms and theatres.
  • $75: Seat a child
Covers the full cost of a child attending live theatre.
  • $150: Lift a Region
High-quality resourcing that strengthens creative opportunities in a regional community.
  • $650: Build the Skills
A half-day workshop that builds confidence, creativity, and connection.
  • $1,500: Get Them There
Transport support so children can access live theatre and creative experiences.
  • $5,000: Light up a School
Brings creative learning to life in one school community.
  • $10,000: Change a Community
Brings a creative learning residency to children in a regional school.
