About this cause

Who are we?

For over 30 years, Outloud has been connecting professional artists and service providers to support and celebrate young people in Western Sydney.

We support young people to make art about issues that matter to them.

We are proudly based in Bankstown, which is one of Australia’s most linguistically and religiously diverse areas, with pockets of severe disadvantage: a true global microcosm.

What do we do?

Using an evidence based approach, we focus on young people's strengths, interests and dreams for the future. Our projects have been throughouly evaluated by universities and found to be strongly beneficial, and effective in helping young people to understand the messages we're teaching, enabling to embody those messages by making art about them, and having their worth and merit reinfoced through public performances.

We focus on early intervention and harm reduction with a view to create social cohesion in our community.

Our projects include:
RESPECT: Teaching boys aged 10-12 singing and songwriting through the lens of understanding and preventing domestic violence. Check out the songs they wrote!
UNITY: Working with girls and gender diverse young people to create music while understanding healthy relationships, consent and boundary setting.
MUSLIM PEERS PROJECT: Supporting young queer Muslim folk through arts activities and events, and free culturally relevant counselling.
ZINE WORKSHOPS: Attending events and making young people's thoughts, ideas, writing, drawings and photographs into published online mini-magazines!

We've been told by participants, parents and teachers that we've not only changed young people's minds about their self-worth and what they can achieve, but we've saved lives by providing holistic support and working with service providers to make sure young people we work with feel seen, cared for and celebrated.

Who do we work with?

We partner with schools and service providers to create a holistic, care-based practice that gives young people transferrable skills that they can use throughtou their lives while they are making art that they can be proud of, building their confidence and celebrating their cultures and identities.

How can you help?

While our projects recieve funding from government bodies, our staff are not covered by these grants. By supporting us directly, you are helping us to do our work by:

  • Helping us rent our space that young people attend
  • Keeping the lights on!
  • Making sure we can pay our artists and facilitators for their expertise and contributions. We work with people who have both artistic skills as well as experience in teaching, psychology or social work. These people are hard to find, so we need to ensure we can keep engaging them in this powerful work.

Every dollar makes a difference. You can help us to keep supporting our community and young people in innovative and celebratory ways!
