Challenging violence and exploitation in the sex industry

About this cause

Project Respect is support for women trafficked for sexual exploitation and women in the sex industry. We assist women one-on-one, create a safe community and advocate for women's rights. We exist because women matter. We are a non-profit, feminist, community-based organisation.

To support women, Project Respect works in three ways:

One, we assist women one-on-one and help them access essential services - such as healthcare and legal representation. Guided entirely by the needs of women, we place no limits on the length or type of support offered. Two, we connect women together - supporting them to support each other. Our lunches and weekends away are safe and non-judgemental - rare spaces where women are welcomed, understood and treated with respect. Three, we advocate for women's rights against violence, trafficking and exploitation. We lobby all levels of government, and offer women a platform to speak - knowing their voices and leadership will create the positive change we seek.

At Project Respect, we believe that all women have the right to feel safe and respected. To achieve a world free from sexual exploitation we are committed to doing what others can't.

By supporting Project Respect, you wills assist us in the following key areas of our work:

  • Conduct outreach to women in brothels across the Greater Melbourne Region;
  • Offer support, counselling and referrals for women in the sex industry, including women who are or have experienced Family Violence;
  • Conduct community education about issues faced by women in the sex industry;
  • Develop comprehensive and accessible information for women in the sex industry;
  • Provide pathways to other forms of employment and studying options (including developing partnerships with businesses willing to employ women referred by Project Respect);
  • Conduct research on trafficking within and to Australia;
  • Conduct research on the sex industry within Australia, including the prevalence of Family Violence perpetrated against women in the industry;
  • Advocate and educate the wider community on the issue of trafficking within Australia
  • Lobby government for better support for trafficked women, and other women in the sex industry.
