About this cause

Fitzroy Learning Network is a Neighbourhood House that gives people the opportunity to realise their potential through direct support and meaningful outcomes created with and for our community.

We provide an innovative, people-focused approach to our learning programs and give multiple learning opportunities to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our community, believing education holds the key to breaking down the barriers. The people we work with face disadvantage every day and include:

  • Refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants
  • Long term unemployed
  • Low-income families
  • Young people and families
  • People living on the housing estates.

Our program includes:

Food relief and support

  • Weekly distribution of fresh produce and pantry staples - 40 households each week
  • 1300 grocery bags in 2021, over 1,000 in the first six months of 2022
  • 160 meals provided on site each week
  • Weekly cooking classes to support independent living


Classes and training

  • English from low to advanced in a flexible learning environment for about 160 students from 17-70 years, from around 18 different countries, many with little education in their own country.
  • Life skills development including knowledge of public transport, shopping, building networks to help community participation and social cohesion.
  • Computer courses for adults to develop their skills to support them navigate our technologically-based society, enter into further training, education, and employment.
  • Vocational courses designed to support learning about preparing for work or to run a small business.
  • Sewing classes, urban farming, craft groups, art classes offer social connections as well as practicial and experiential activities.

Refugee and Community Support Services

  • An integral part of our holistic approach, the Refugee and Community Support Worker provides services to assist our students and their families to fully participate in their learning and settle successfully in the community.
  • Linkages developed for new arrivals to access health services, schools, employment opportunities, and legal representation.
