Fitzroy Learning Network

Fitzroy Learning Network General Appeal

The Fitzroy Learning Network is a high profile, educational organisation, based in the heart of the community. We provide an innovative, people focused approach to our learning programs and give multiple learning opportunities to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our community, believing education holds the key to breaking down the barriers. Our target groups are:

  • Refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants.
  • Long term unemployed
  • Low-income families
  • Kids "at risk" of not completing secondary college

The type of educational assistance we provide:

English classes

  • Our classes range from functional English to intermediate and more advanced. We provide a flexible learning environment for up to 160 students aged from 17-70 with real literacy difficulties
  • The students come from 18 different countries and many have had little education in their own country
  • Life skills development, knowledge of public transport, shopping, increasing networks and linkages to help with participation in the community and social cohesion for this vulnerable group.

Computer courses

  • Computer courses for adults were developed as a necessity to entering mainstream employment.

Refugee and Community Support Services

  • An integral part of our holistic approach to education the Refugee and Community Support Worker provides services to assist our students and their families to fully participate in their learning and settle successfully in the community.
  • Linkages developed for new arrivals to access health services, schools, employment opportunities and legal representation.
  • Sewing classes, wellbeing classes and much more.

Computer clubhouse

  • The Computer Clubhouse, the first of its kind in Australia helps 60 kids, aged from 10-18 years old. It is open weekdays from 3.30-6.30pm.
  • The Clubhouse helps bridge the digital divide and gives disadvantaged kids the opportunity to experience the world of computing through multimedia technology in a friendly environment with volunteer mentors.
