Therapy and support for hearing-impaired children

About this cause
Every year around 40 Western Australian families are faced with the devastating news that their precious bundle of joy has been born with a permanent hearing loss.

However, a diagnosis of permanent hearing loss no longer commits a child to a world of silence as it once did, provided they fitted with an appropriate hearing device and take part in critical early intervention services.

How can we help?

Telethon Speech and Hearing (TSH) has been helping hearing-impaired infants and children learn to listen and speak since its humble beginnings in 1967.  The Centre's intensive therapy programs are founded in the belief that hearing-impaired children can participate independently in society if they acquire good spoken language.

TSH early intervention provides critical support and therapy to help children with hearing impairment develop the early listening and language skills comparable to their hearing peers. Highly specialised auditory-based therapy is combined with audiology, psychology, occupational therapy and early deaf education to ensure children and their families are fully supported on their progression to listening and speaking.

How you can help?

You can help a child reach their potential in life by supporting their journey through intensive therapy and support programs.
  • $50 for a hearing screening test on a child at risk of hearing loss due to middle ear disease
  • $100 for one auditory-verbal therapy session
  • $250 for one child to receive a home acoustic environment assessment
  • $500 for one therapy playgroup for 6-10 toddlers with a hearing impairment
  • $1000 for one child's pre-Cochlear implant related services and audiological testing
  • $35,000 is the average cost of providing therapy services for one child for a year
