Pound Rounds

"Nobody makes a greater mistake than he who does nothing because he could only do a little."
- Edmund Burke

A group of volunteers that uses every avenue possible to save pooches from being killed in Hawkesbury and Blacktown Pound in Sydney, NSW, Australia. As our No Kill paradigm suggests, although rescue is one measure to help save dogs lives in these pounds, PR believes in supporting all measures possible, education of the public of kill rates/frequencies, direct adoption, awareness, desexing, foster programs and welfare advocation.

** The model includes supporting impounded pets at risk of being killed by;
  1. Visiting the pounds to gain information on temperament, take videos, photos and widely advertise and market that information.
  2. Sponsoring private adoption from the pound with subsidised mandatory desexing (SMD) program.
  3. Suporting trusted rescue groups by;
    i) incubating new groups,
    ii) sourcing foster carers,
    iii) fundraising for transport, vetwork and kenneling where possible
    iv) procurement and logistics support
    iv-a) sourcing new service providers and reducing costs (vetwork, transport)
    iv-b) helping with or organising transport from the pound to vets etc
  4. PR rescue work
  5. Media and press release and awareness events Visiting the pounds to gain information on temperament, take videos and photos.

    Advertising these pets using social networking site, blogging, for sale sites.

    With the local pound suburbs responsible for over 70% of the impounds, PR tries to increase the audience for these pets. Our view is that the only people who were aware of the pets in imminent danger of being killed were breeders who use the pound like a discount warehouse, the local residents, who were 15 times more likely to have their pet impounded and half as likely statistically to reclaim their pet, and rescue groups. Sadly rescue cannot save them all. Sadly, rescue did not save them all. In the 2009 / 2010 period more than 25% of the pets in one enormous facility were killed. In 2008, 1419 dogs were killed*. Wrapped in black plastic and dumped in landfill. Rescue were responsible for only 15% of the total number of impounds being saved. Not necessarily the dogs on the kill lists, that 15% included puppies, small fluffies and pure breed rehoming. A greater number of pets were killed at the Blacktown Pound than anywhere else in NSW*. They needed your help.

    The record reduction in that kill rate was made possible by one person. YOU.

    The public make this possible. You made this possible. Fostering, adoption and supporting rescue groups who do their utmost best to save as many as possible. Together we achieved this remarkable result.

    The No Kill equation embraces far more measures than just rescue groups or just desexing or just adoption or just community responsbility or just shelters opening up foster programs, it encompasses all aspects of outreach, education and the truth about kill shelters. Pound Rounds is group that aspires to the No Kill paradigm.

    In these pages you will find albums of dogs that need your help and information on fostering programs and how they work. You will also find, lots of support, love and resources for you to help a life on deathrow, break free, grow wings and fly to their safety. The safety of a loving home. A good meal. A warm bed.

    NOT AFFILIATED WITH POUNDS

    We are in NO WAY affiliated with the pounds, nor do we represent these pounds. Staff at the facilities are familiar with dogs and can advise us of temperment and when given we respect their descriptions. We will also post some obversation notes from our own experiences and interactions with our beautiful pound souls.

    These pets are usually the last ones left - and have extremely limited time before their lives may be extinguished forever. We are only here for them. Urgent cases that need to get released from the prison of their shelter or pound.
