About this cause
Mission Statement: The National Theatre exists to provide Australian and international students with affordable, world-class training in Ballet and Dance, Drama and Music Theatre in a dynamic, caring, non-discriminatory environment that recognises the potential of the performing arts to enhance life skills as well as provide a career. Our Schools are complemented and supported by a versatile, professional performance space that is also available to community and educational institutions at favourable rates, enhancing our links with the City of Port Phillip, its residents and the wider community.

How will the funds be used?

National Theatre Community Access Scheme: The overwhelming majority of the hirers of the National Theatre are schools and community groups that the National Theatre heavily subsidises with reduced or zero rentals. Without the National the majority of these groups would have no access to a major professional stage and would be forced back into Church Halls and other sub-standard performance venues. A recent development with the tendering and/or amalgamation of many local councils and council venues has been the eviction of long-standing community groups in favour of commercial and corporate hirers of council venues. The charter of the National (as a not for profit organisation) is primarily concerned with providing assistance and training to Australians in the Arts and we have maintained our allegiance to the above groups rather than going 'commercial' for this reason. This is despite the fact that the National is currently unsubsidised by either the Federal or State Governments. With the continued support of the community we plan to continue this service indefinitely. As a Community Performing Arts Centre we are also a community resource as we support local groups with heavily subsidised rentals. This includes dance, drama and community activities ranging from Body Building to calisthenics. Professional groups such as Chunky Move Dance, Leigh Warren Dancers, Royal Academy of Dance, Australian Institute of Classical Dance (AICD) and the South Australian Theatre Company have also run seasons in Melbourne supported by the National.

We are an important community asset and continue to support both the arts community directly and the wider community as a major venue.

National Theatre Training Schools: Briefly, the National Theatre Schools provide training in Ballet and Drama to a wide cross section of students drawn mainly from the Melbourne metropolitan area but also from interstate, New Zealand and (from 1996) overseas. The Ballet School fulltime Advanced Diploma of Arts (classical dance) course (accredited 1992) has an average enrolment of 30 over the three year course which currently include 4 from Japan, 1 from New Zealand and 3 from interstate. Training is provided from junior beginner to professional levels with a high proportion of graduate students gaining work professionally. During 2003 a Certificate 2 (dance) was introduced and the Diploma of Arts (acting) was accredited in 2004. Further qualifications in both Acting and Dance were introduced from 2005. Both Diplomas are the first vocational courses in their fields in Australia. The National Schools of Performing Arts have, since 1935, provided a constant source of trained and successful members of the Arts Industry. Currently over six hundred students from all over Australia as well as Japan, New Zealand and Indonesia are enrolled in Drama, Music Theatre and Ballet. Our students regularly top the state in VCE. As a School with its own main-stage auditorium we are unique in Australia and provide a strong performance-based training.

Key Areas of Expenditure

With an annual turnover of $1.4 million dollars we employ an average 124 staff, 9 of them full-time and a further 40 part-time. Despite this we operate on a break-even budget with little provision for capital improvements or student & theatre client subsidies. Any increase in our costs, or decline in our income, would force us into deficit as alternative sources of income (mainly philanthropic organisations) are already stretched.
Our operations utilise all funds raised to maintain student & theatre costs at affordable levels. Scholarships are offered to talented students or those in cases of financial hardship. Charities and Educational institutions receive discounted access to the venue while community groups are subsidised by our fundraising and limited commercial lettings.
In recent years funds have also been used to install Handicapped Access (2003), OHS improvements, Additional backstage facilities (2007) and improved training studios equipment (2008). Currently funds are being raised for air conditioning and better staging (load-in) facilities. As the building was heritage listed in 2006, we are also raising funds for Heritage Conservation.
