Across many levels - globally, nationally, and personally - violence against women is an issue which demands more than passive concern. This November, I'm running 106km at Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko to raise money for Engender Equality and contribute to ending violence against women.
For a long time, but particularly this year, I have carried a deep sense of fear and anger. These feelings stem not just from my own experiences, but from the sickeningly common experience of others. The weight of this has been overwhelming - but running has been a consistent outlet, and often the key motivator in keeping me upright.
While I'm no stranger to ultramarathons, they are inherently bound to discomfort and require a significant level of resilience. When discomfort is already high and resilience is low, knowing your 'why' for these events is essential. Running UTK will offer personal catharsis and empowerment, but it also falls just two days after the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November). Learning this felt like a sign: my purpose in this event is greater than me, alone. It is a chance to channel my fear and anger and turn it into meaning and purpose. I'm not just running to process; I am running for progress.
Engender Equality is a Tasmanian not-for-profit organisation supporting individuals, families and communities affected by family and domestic violence. They provide a range of services, including therapy and support for victim-survivors, education and training, and advocacy for systemic change to gender inequity and violence against women. Critically, this approach addresses both the root causes and ongoing impacts of intimate partner violence and abuse. It is deeply meaningful to be able to support this organisation, bringing funds and awareness to such an important cause.
In running towards the finish line, I hope to be running towards a safer, more positive future. I have set the goal of raising $10 for every kilometre, totalling $1060. I would appreciate your support in this endeavour, whether directly through donation, or indirectly, by turning your thoughts, words, and actions towards our common goal.
Thank you x
